Whilst Labour’s official position is to secure a Brexit where the UK stays in the customs union and maintains a ‘close relationship’ with the single market, there are many MPs and grassroots members who strongly oppose any form of Brexit. Several junior shadow ministers told The Guardian they are prepared to resign their posts rather than vote against a pro-referendum amendment at the end of the month. With just six weeks to go before exit day on March 29, Mr Corbyn is struggling to keep his party together.

Drawn up in a late-night meeting chaired by shadow Brexit Secretary Keir Starmer, the party’s policy states that if a General Election is not secured then “Labour must support all options remaining on the table, including campaigning for a public vote.”

It declared: “If the Government is confident in negotiating a deal that working people, our economy and communities will benefit from they should not be afraid to put that deal to the public.”

The Government and the Labour leadership have finally begun a conversation after months and years of pure antagonism over Brexit.
