The Prime Minister gave her Cabinet advice on how to make jam last longer during a meeting. Mrs May revealed she often scrapes mould off old jam and eats the contents below it in the jar. The Daily Telegraph reported that Mrs May said the jam under the mould was “perfectly edible”, adding that food shouldn’t always be thrown away just because they have gone past a best before date.

But the Food Standards Agency (FSA) said “unseen toxins” could cause harm to particularly vulnerable groups including children, pregnant women and the elderly.

An agency source told the Daily Telegraph: "Some species of mould can produce toxins that are known to have adverse effects in humans as well as in animals.

“It is advised not to eat food that is obviously rotten or containing mould due to potential risks from mould.”
