Originally, it was thought that the cull could have been part of the social media platform’s fake accounts.
An Instagram spokesperson told Mirror Online: "We're aware of an issue causing a change in account follower numbers for some people right now.
“We're working quickly to fix this."
Among the biggest organisations and people hit by the loss of followers were Nike and popstar Katy Perry.
