The 16-year-old was attacked at about 4pm on Thursday outside Joseph Chamberlain College in Highgate. A fellow student told how they held the victim after he was attacked and urged him to “stay with me, stay with me”. Police say the victim was taken to hospital in a critical condition.

Two others were also injured in the attack on Belgrave Road.

A West Midlands Police spokesman said a 16-year-old has been arrested following the incident.

An 18-year-old witness said the attacker was wearing a mask.

He told Birmingham Live how he saw the victim “tumbling towards the floor”.
