The intervention has emerged after official figures revealed only one in 10 jihadists have been prosecuted. A large amount of Islamist fighters returning to the UK from Syria were placed in rehabilitation schemes instead of being prosecuted, according to The Daily Telegraph. Senior US officials are reportedly frustrated after former schoolgirl, Shamima Begum, pleaded to come back to the UK.

The officials believe Guantanamo could hold more than 50 Islamic State and Levant fighters, including two surviving members of the “Beatles” terrorist group that executed Western hostages.

There is growing frustration within the Trump administration over how Britain and parts of Europe are not taking back their foreign fights for prosecution in their own courts.

But the Home Office Minister in charge of security has declined the plea of Shamima Begum and insisted her “actions have consequences”.

Senior sources have suggested Ms Begum could be barred from entering the country and be prosecuted in Turkey or Iraq.
