She explained on BBC Newsnight how an unnamed Conservative colleague was facing deselection after an influx of former Ukip members into his local association. She accused the Prime Minister of leading the Conservative Party into the “wilderness” by capitulating to the pro-Brexit European Research Group (ERG). The Broxtowe MP added that eurosceptics should have been “slung out” of the party “many years ago”.
Ms Soubry told Newsnight’s Emily Maitlis: “They are now in control of the associations.
“We have got a purple momentum - I’m not exaggerating!
“I spoke to a colleague of mine I have a lot of time for, a great friend, and he was telling me in his own association he is now being threatened with deselection because he voted for the Prime Minister’s deal.
“In his association, they’ve had 80 new members in about 80 days and they are all ex-UKIP members, they are not Conservatives.”
