Flights can be very stressful for passengers, particularly during take off and landing, as well as during times of turbulence. It’s easy to think that these parts must also be the worst for the plane’s pilots, too. However, a pilot has revealed this is, in fact, not the case. In reality, the time when you might least expect it is the hardest for aviators. As the plane taxis to the runway, passengers tend to feel relaxed as being on the ground can seem safer than being up in the air.

Pilot Patrick Smith has explained in his 2013 book Cockpit Confidential that it’s taxiing which is the trickiest.

“The hardest part, sometimes, is just getting between the parking stand and the cabin,” Smith wrote.

“Taxiing for takeoff feels pretty leisurely in the cabin, but this is one of the busiest phases of flight.”

Smith explained that pilots have lots of work to do at this very vital stage.
