Cruise crew spend many days and nights working on board the floating hotels. Many are young, single and keen to make the most of the freedom and travel that the job provides. A former cruise worker, Joshua Kinser, has revealed what crew life was like during his career in his 2018 book, Chronicles of a Cruise Ship Crew Member. One thing he particularly said he enjoyed on board were the parties with his colleagues. “We never had to walk far to find celebration on the ship,” he said. “Once a month on most ships, the cruise ship company paid for an official crew party, usually with a theme like ‘70s Disco party,’ or ‘Dress Up Like a Superhero.’”

Not only were these cruise parties good fun but they were also important for crew morale.

“These parties were often helpful when ship life began to get us down,” explained Kinser.

“It was always enjoyable to have the opportunity to bring music to the crew and entertain those who worked so hard on the ship.

“We could also attend the occasional deck parties,” he said, “where an open-air area of the ship would be roped off for crew to gather out under the stars as the ship sailed through the night, dancing to that odd mix of international dance music that is only played by cruise ship DJs.”

Kinser revealed that whenever he thinks of cruise ship parties, he envisages a huge crowd of crew from countries all over the world “all dancing together under the stars to ‘Gasoline’ by Daddy Yankee while dressed like scantily clad pirates for the pirates-and-wenches themed night.”

What’s more, the parties were where friendships were cemented and bonds were forged.
