The warning was made by Dr Shiraz Maher, director of the International Centre for the Study of Radicalisation. ISIS have suffered major reverses in Syria in Iraq over the past two years. Their final Syrian strongholds are expected to fall shortly to Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) troops.
Dr Maher argued in response ISIS will “feel the need to do a big attack on the West”.
Speaking to The Mirror he said: “The threat will intensify in the next months, because they will want to show they have risen from the ashes.
“It’s like pressing down on a balloon - the air moves to different parts.
"ISIS fighters will want to carry out attacks on the West, using their narrative of vengeance and to demonstrate their ongoing relevance and prowess.”
