The Welsh singer is known throughout the UK for selling over 100 million records, and has had 36 songs make it into the UK Top 40. Shortly after the summer of 2017, it was revealed that Tom Jones underwent hip replacement surgery. But, what is hip replacement surgery, and how do you know if you qualify for one?

Hip replacement surgery is usually necessary when the hip joint is worn or damaged

A hip replacement is common, but major type of surgery that aims to replace a damaged hip, according to the NHS.

The damaged hip is replaced with an artificial one - known as prosthesis, it said.

The most common reason that someone may require a hip replacement is due to osteoarthritis, but there are a number of other reasons.

“Hip replacement surgery is usually necessary when the hip joint is worn or damaged to the extent that your mobility is reduced and you experience pain even while resting,” said the NHS.

“Other conditions that can cause hip joint damage include rheumatoid arthritis, a hip fracture, septic arthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis.
