Viewers have watched Shelagh (played by Laura Main) and Doctor Turner (Steven McGann) building up a relationship with their foster child, a little girl from China, on the latest BBC series so far.

Tonight, the family came full circle as Shelagh and Doctor Turner watched proudly as the child and their own daughter stood in their matching uniforms ready for the first day of school.

It was clear the two girls have also become the best of friends in such a short time, but the adoption agency had sad news for the Scottish midwife.

Arranging for a meeting with the married couple, the agency worker informed Shelagh and Doctor Turner they had managed to find a forever home for the little girl, meaning she would soon be ripped away from them.
