The MP had occupied his seat for 31 years and had recently announced that he would step down at the earliest opportunity. Mr Flynn had originally won his seat in 1987 and fought for the seat again in June 2017. Labour leader, Jeremy Corbyn said that Mr Flynn would be "greatly missed".

Newport West Labour said: "It’s with great sadness that we let you know that our MP, Paul Flynn, has died today."

“Paul is a hero to many of us in the Newport Labour family and we mourn for his family’s loss.

“We would ask that the privacy of Paul’s family is respected at this difficult time.”

The 84-year-old had briefly served as Shadow Secretary of State for Wales and Shadow Leader of the House during his career.
