In images shared widely on social media yesterday, the pledge has been seen in some quarters as a way to stop angry Labour supporters from leaving the party and forming a new pro-EU group. According to the Daily Telegraph, prominent Labour figures such as Remainers Chuka Umunna and Luciana Berger could be on the verge of quitting the party in the ongoing row over Brexit and antisemitism. It comes as the Conservatives prepare to tackle Labour’s handling of antisemitic complaints during a debate in the House of Commons on Wednesday.
The pledge, which was sent to members during the weekend, says: “I pledge to work for the achievement of a Labour-led Government under whatever leadership members elect.
“And I accept a Labour-led Government infinitely better than any other election outcome.”
But now Labour MPs have reacted to being forced to sign the 30-word pledge.
Gavin Shuker told the Daily Telegraph he felt as though he was being told “to completely obey an not question the Great Leader Jeremy Corbyn”.
