Visitors were forced out of the iconic building in South Kensington due to an “emergency”, they said. Thousands of people had entered the museum today, the first day of half term. One said: “Emergency evacuation at @ nhm_london but we do not know what is happening.” Another said: “#NaturalHistoryMuseum being evacuated due to an emergency. What’s happening? @NHM_London.”

Photographs from the scene showed crowds of people around Hope the wale skeleton, trying to exit the museum.

The evacuation orders sounded through the museum, though it is understood the red zone of the museum was open.

There was confusion among families, who claimed information was hard to get hold of.
