Mr Watson admitted he “no longer recognises” his own party sometimes and that he “feared this day would come”. He said he would be working to develop his own policies with MPs that play to Labour’s “traditions”. This shock confession comes after Chuka Umunna, Luciana Berger and five others splintered off from the Labour Party yesterday and formed the Independent Group.

They cited Mr Corbyn’s Brexit position and anti-Semitism among their reasons for leaving.
Mr Watson said: “I love this party. But sometimes I no longer recognise it.”
He added: “I confess I feared this day would come.
“And now I fear, that unless we change, we may see more days like this.
