According to Closer magazine in France, Karl Lagerfeld has died aged 85.
The publication states he died after a period of ill health that lasted for weeks.
He was reportedly taken to The American hospital of Paris on Monday and was admitted overnight.
His cause of death is not yet known.
Express.co.uk has reached out to his representatives for comment.
Back in January, the designer missed two of Chanel’s haute couture fashion shows in Paris.
The company said his absence was due to him “feeling tired”.
In a statement read out after he missed the second show, it said: "Mr Lagerfeld, artistic director of Chanel, who was feeling tired, asked Virginie Viard, director of the creative studio of the house, to represent him."
Lagerfeld’s absence was the first time he has missed the show.
Karl is widely known as the creative director of Chanel as well as Fendi and his own fashion label.
