Tory MP and Brexit supporter Andrew Bridgen has claimed the threat of the UK walking away from negotiations with no deal is the reason the EU is willing to do “any sort of negotiation whatsoever”. Speaking on Channel 4 News, Mr Bridgen claimed those wanting to take no deal off the table don’t want Britain to leave the EU. The Conservative MP was asked about what he thinks would happen if an amendment was passed which delayed Britain’s departure from the EU and blocked no deal.

Mr Bridgen said: “Let’s be clear, anybody who wants to take no deal off the table doesn’t really want us to leave the European Union. Or have never negotiated anything.

“It is only the threat of no deal, the walkway position that is getting the EU to do any sort of negotiation whatsoever.

“To take no deal off the table would be like locking yourself in the car showroom, telling the salesman I can’t leave until I have bought a car.”

Asked what would happen if the Malthouse Compromise is dropped, Mr Bridgen replied: “If the Prime Minister comes back to the House next week with a potentially unchanged withdrawal agreement.
