Prime Minister Theresa May travelled to Brussels on Wednesday to meet with European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker to discuss the Brexit statement. Mrs May has been working to try to obtain legally binding changes to the controversial backstop mechanism within the withdrawal agreement. Commenting on Britain’s departure from the EU, former European Commission president Jose Manuel Barroso called for the bloc to “show some sense of compromise”.
Mr Barroso added the European Union should work to help “find a solution to the backstop”, which could break the Brexit stalemate.
He told Sky News: “It has been remarkable until now that 27 countries have been more united than one country.
“In fact, the real problem here is that there was a majority to say no in the referendum but there was not a majority to say yes to a specific solution.
“There was an agreement between the EU 27 countries and the UK Government but where there is not an agreement is in the British Parliament.
