The President of the European Commission has recently come under fire after Italian MEPs from the Five Star Movement due to his exorbitant salary, which amounts to €27,436 (£24,006) a month. The alarm was raised a few days after Mr Juncker received widespread criticism for putting a 125-mile trip to pick up a dog driven in his luxury car on expenses. In early January, the Luxembourgish politician made a three-hour detour with his wife to stop at Vilseck, Germany, to pick up mongrel terrier Caruso as he travelled back to native Luxembourg after collecting a "media freedom" award.
The entire trip, including the visit to the dog shelter, was claimed back by Mr Juncker, who announced the rescue pooch will be the EU’s “first dog”, replacing Plato, his former pet.
Following his perceived unwillingness to reopen negotiations with British Prime Minister Theresa May, many eurosceptics have also hit out at the EU chief for showing “no interest in trying to get a good deal for the 27 members of the EU”.
As Mr Juncker appears to be increasingly under fire by member states, it has emerged that his style of leadership has been questioned by Europeans since the start of his presidency.
