The Brexit Party MEP defended British fishermen to members of the European Commission as he insisted fishing communities "will not cooperate" with the European Union after Brexit. Mr Gill addressed colleagues in Brussels over proposed plans to grant EU vessels access to UK waters after Brexit, reiterating the unwillingness of British fishermen to be "ordered around". The British MEP said: "As the report says, we ‘may’ cooperate but why should we want to?

"You want to cooperate with people who see a mutual advantage, you cooperate with friends, with allies. 

"You do not cooperate with people who order you around, tell you that you have no choice and, generally, behave more like bullies than comrades."

Mr Gill also dismissed claims Brexit could become a "catastrophe" for fishermen: "The speeches and intervention this morning kind of remind me why so many of our fishing communities throughout Britain voted for Brexit.

"They could see how unfair the fishing policy of the EU was. The fact you are going on and on about this Brexit catastrophe – for UK fishermen and women it won’t be a catastrophe, will it?"
