On Wednesday Prime Minister Theresa May was dealt a huge blow after three anti-Brexit MPs resigned from the Conservative Party to join the Independent Group. It followed eight Labour MPs who earlier this week joined the Independent Group, walking away from Jeremy Corbyn’s party. Speaking on BBC’s Politics Live, BBC presenter Nick Robinson explained why both leaders in the Commons were silent over the defections.
He said: “It was awfully British, wasn’t it? Reminded me of that episode of Fawlty Towers in which they said again and again, ‘don’t mention the war’.
“The war that has claimed three Tory MPs, just this morning, just in the last few hours, joining the new Independent Group, the war that led to eight Labour MPs walking out on Jeremy Corbyn.
“Presumably he felt he possibly couldn’t mention defections, because she might mention his.
“And she couldn’t mention defections, because she might mention hers. All a bit of a mess.”
