He argued normal citizens don’t understand the economic implications of quitting the block. Mr Barnes added those MPs who quit the Labour and Conservative Parties earlier this week should be “commended”. However his comments were attacked by Brexit backing writer Ella Whelan.
She commented: “It’s very dangerous when you get into those sort of discussions because what you’re essentially saying is the average voter is thick.
“I think Brexit is the best thing that has happened to British politics because it has thrown up so many questions.
“The idea that the average voter doesn’t understand it is where the kind of elitist anti-democratic politics the new party group comes from.”
On Monday seven Labour MPs broke away from their Party, arguing it had failed to effectively oppose the Government on Brexit or deal with anti-Semitism within its ranks.
They formed the Independent Group in Parliament, which could potentially be converted into a new political party.
