An unverified video appears to show him being beaten by civilians, before a Pakistani soldier intervenes. The Pakistani military later posted, then removed, a video showing Mr Abhinandan being questioned after the attack. The Indian government condemned what it described as a “vulgar display of injured personnel”. However a later video clip shows Mr Abhinandan drinking tea without a blindfold, whilst also complementing the Pakistani military on how they treated him. The pilot has been listed as “missing in action” by Indian officials. The Indian and Pakistani governments have released contradictory accounts of the military action which took place yesterday. However India has only admitted to losing one warplane, and claims it shot down a Pakistani jet in return which its rival denies. Yesterday's confrontation began after Pakistani aircraft struck in Indian territory, in apparent retaliation for an earlier Indian attack on alleged militant camps within its borders. On February 26 12 Indian Mirage 2000 jets bombed what it claimed were bases of the Jaish-e-Mohammed armed group. They claimed to have killed hundreds of militants though Pakistan, which denies Jaish-e-Mohammed has camps on its territory, said there were no casualties. India and Pakistan contest control of Kashmir, which is currently split between the two countries, and have fought two wars over the territory. Over the past 30 years India has been confronting an armed insurgency in the Muslim majority region, which it alleges is supported by Pakistan. The Pakistani government strongly denies the claim.
