The House Speaker effectively poured cold water over the resolution by Ms Ocasio-Cortez which was put forward as a wide-ranging stimulus package. Aimed at responding to several economic, social and environmental issues, the new resolution included guarantees for a sustainable wage and restrictions on fossil fuels but has failed to receive the backing of Ms Pelosi. In an interview with Rolling Stone on Thursday, Ms Pelosi regarded the ambitious project as going beyond the party’s remit which she stated was simply “about saving the planet”.
Ms Pelosi also added: “It’s kind of a broader agenda. All good values, but nonetheless, not what we hope to achieve with this focused, determined, decision-making: You’re either for the planet or you are not.
“There is no Plan B for the planet. We have to preserve it, and it is in great jeopardy.
“You have to make decisions that you’re going to reach certain goals, and some of the goals we think are achievable. That’s why public opinion is so important.”
