Travellers eager for a sun-soaked escape at a purse friendly price often find themselves having to compromise. With negotiation a no-go on pre-set flight prices, except in the presence of a sale, it is often the accommodation where holidaymakers look to save cash. Some opt to downgrade from a five star hotel to an establishment less favourably ranked. Others plump for budget options such as hostels, or campsites, so they can have extra pennies for spending in their final destination.

Yet a new report has flagged the top 13 stunning – yet price savvy – hotel destinations.

Conde Nast Traveller’s Editor’s List findings include two options in Mexico, three in Bali and three in Sri Lanka.

Individual properties in Costa Rica, Australia, Cambodia, Columbia and Vietnam are also flagged up.

These include the gorgeous Australian hotel, Bannisters Port Stephens, which houses UK-born chef Rick Stein’s second Australian restaurant.

Talking of the accommodation and dreamy location, the publication states: “A drowned river valley lined with sleepy towns a two-hour drive from Sydney, Port Stephens is the sort of place where you could easily while away a week.

“There are miles of powder-soft beach, a resident bottle-nosed dolphin population and cerulean waters that make an extraordinary habitat for turtles, grey nurse sharks and black rock cod.

“And it’s also the location for Rick Stein’s second Australian restaurant, a lofty, light-filled space in the box-fresh £8-million remodel of the 1968
