Stacey Dooley said “of course it hurts” when she reads “snooty comments” criticising her accent and the fact she left school at 16. The Strictly Come Dancing winner grew up on a council estate with her single mother Dianne, before bursting onto the television scene. The 31-year-old said she has “more life experiences” than most as she hit back in an interview with YOU Magazine last weekend. It comes after she was awarded an MBE for services to broadcasting last year, but missed the ceremony.

Stacey told the publication: “Some people can’t believe the audacity of my covering important subjects.”

She continued after previously being branded “whiny”: “Of course it hurts when people make fun of how I talk.

“Especially when I’ve probably got more life experiences than someone who studied at Oxbridge and went straight into the Beeb.”

On when she’ll collect her MBE, she stated: “We’ll go sometime this year.”
