Season five of Peaky Blinders will be released on BBC One later this year as the highly-anticipated Cillian Murphy gangster series makes a comeback. The new series of the drama will see Murphy’s Birmingham kingpin Tommy Shelby now ensconced in the world of local politics as he climbs the social ladder. Peaky Blinders is also set to see more characters joining but will the drama take an American turn?

There was speculation after season four of Peaky Blinders wrapped up that the show could feature notorious gangster from Chicago after the Shelbys managed to get some back up from across the Pond.

Michael Grey (Finn Cole) was sent on a mission by Tommy to win friends in America, who could help defeat the Sicilian mafia led by Luca Changretta (Adrien Brody).

Many fans at the time were hoping This Is England star Stephen Graham would again don the mantle of notorious gangster Al Capone as he did in Boardwalk Empire.

“I don’t know where Al Capone came from because it’s certainly not going to be in,” Knight explained.

He continued: “I’ve resisted going in that direction because the problem is that as soon as you go Chicago, 1920s gangsters - it’s been done a million times.

“It’s a bit of a minefield and you have to be so careful. So no, in series five definitely no. It will be Birmingham, England.”

The acclaimed writer added: “Stephen Graham is absolutely brilliant. He’s a fantastic actor but Al Capone is not going to be depicted.”
