The taxpayer-funded company - dubbed "Notwork Rail" by critics - was heavily involved in last year's timetable meltdown which caused misery across the country. The proportion of cancelled or severely delayed trains is also at the highest level since 2001. And Network Rail faces fines running into millions of pounds from the regulator if it fails to improve performance. Yet rail passengers faced a 3.1 percent increase in fares in January.
