Theresa May has been fighting to try to gain concessions from the EU on the controversial backstop mechanism within her Brexit withdrawal agreement for the deal to pass in the House of Commons. Political strategist John McTernan, a former advisor to the Labour Party, claimed Mrs May requires a time limit to the backstop, which he claims Ireland simply cannot accept. Mr McTernan also said the Prime Minister was playing a game of chicken with both the Remainers and Brexiteers in the Commons.
He said: “The EU27 have no intention of giving Geoffrey Cox anything that he wants. Will he get something that can persuade the ERG and the DUP?
“The question is, the Prime Minister is playing chicken with two sets of people. One is the Labour MP she is threatening no deal too, and the other is the ERG and the DUP and she is threatening, ‘well maybe it is no Brexit’.
“She is saying no deal to one side, no Brexit to the other side, and the question is ‘who holds their nerves?'
“The question is, will people walk down the ladder? Geoffrey Cox is obviously offering something, some words.
“We have heard lots of discussions, but the thing it pivots on is can there be a time limit on the backstop.
