The Duchess is the first woman to be allowed to assume the title of the Duchess of Sussex, according to a royal expert. The first Duke of Sussex, Prince Augustus, who married twice couldn’t give either of his wives the title. Victoria Arbiter explained both marriages had contravened the Royal Marriages Act and were considered void.
Ms Arbiter was also able to shed light on why Meghan Markle and Kate are not princesses.
She explained it is the Queen who decided Meghan and Kate would not receive the princess title.
She wrote in honey.nine: “Had the Queen not conferred wedding day dukedoms on William and Harry, their wives would have been known as Princess William of Wales and Princess Henry of Wales in the same way Baroness Marie Christine von Reibnitz became Princess Michael of Kent upon her 1978 marriage to Prince Michael.
