After Life on Netflix follows Tony (played by Rickey Gervais) who tragically lost his wife, Lisa (Kerry Godliman) before the show begins.
Viewers find Tony in an extremely difficult period in his life, as he believes the reason for living has been taken away from him.
As a local journalist, Tony spends much of his time venturing through town and speaking to people to find stories for the daily paper.
But Tony has stopped caring - he doesn’t want to be happy about anything - and therefore he brutally lashes out at members of the public for talking to him (or, as he sees it, annoying him).
Tony’s interactions with the town’s locals are where most of the show’s comedy is found.
Whether he is calling a nosy man a “fat hairy c*******er,” or a schoolchild a “c**t” Ricky hones in on a brutal comedy which shocks and appalls as quickly as it entertains.
However the comedy in After Life is just half of its delicate story, as a lot of time is spent with Tony in utter grief over losing his wife.
The show even explores some harrowing scenes of him attempting to take his own life - one of which he would have succeeded if he hadn’t begun worrying about his dog’s welfare.
Ricky wrote, directed, and starred in this story, and it feels as if he really gave it a lot of thought.
Each character he created for the show has been given a purpose in the six-episode run - whether it’s helping Tony out by annoying him, or cleaning his dishes - each person has a meaning.
