Darryl Rowe, 27, who was diagnosed with the virus in 2015, would meet men on dating apps and enter relationships without disclosing his condition. He would have unprotected sex or tamper with condoms, in Edinburgh, Sussex and north-east England. Many of Rowe's victims are now living with HIV.
His trial heard it was a "campaign" to infect as many men as possible.
He was the first person in the UK convicted for intentionally spreading the virus.
At a trial in Brighton last year he was found guilty of five counts of grievous bodily harm and five of attempted GBH and jailed for life. He had infected five men with HIV.
Judge Christine Henson QC called his crimes a "determined, hateful campaign of sly violence".
