The National Weather Service has called the storm a “cyclone of historic proportions”. The rare weather phenomenon will blanket the US with rain and snow and will strengthen by dropping 24 millibars, units of atmospheric pressure, in the next 24 hours. Up to 74 million people are expected to be affected by the severe weather ranging from blizzard conditions to flooding.
Denver is expected to receive as much as a foot of snow overnight as blizzard warnings are in place.
Parts of Wyoming and Colorado could also see up to 18 inches of snow.
AccuWeather meteorologist Alex Sosnowski said: “The worst weather is forecast for the Plains, from Texas up to the Dakotas.
“We expect a major blizzard to unfold with winds likely to approach hurricane force, heavy snow and massive drifts.”
