The decision follows a highlevel review of titles and uniforms by the Army Ceremonial Board, which includes a senior female officer. More than 100 women have already applied to join the infantry after the Ministry of Defence relaxed gender restrictions which previously prevented them from serving in frontline regiments. The decision not to change the guardsman title was announced by Brigadier Frazer Lawrence, Colonel of the Regiment, the Duke of Lancaster's last week.

Now consideration is being given to allowing women to wear skirts instead of trousers.
Women will be allowed to serve in each Guards' regiment sovereign company for the
