For five decades teams have worked to restore Machaerus, Jordan, the place where the iconic Jewish preacher was beheaded between 28AD and 36AD. According to Sputnik News, Hungarian archaeologist Gyozo Voros, who supervised the restoration scheme, said work to “leave Machaerus as an “authentic and reliable historical place” had concluded. Experts believe the restored fortress was the location where John was killed.

John appeared in New Testament texts, which claim Jesus was one of his followers or disciples.

He was renowned in Christianity as the man who most scholars agreed baptised Jesus.

John was executed by King Herod after the preacher rebuked him for divorcing his wife and unlawfully taking the wife of his brother.
