The Duke of Sussex was chosen over Prince William for the title just weeks before he is due to become a father. Zara, 37, has been close to the prince since the pair were children and it was in fact Harry who introduced her to husband Mike Tindall. The prince, 34, was joined by Meghan, 37, and other senior royals for Saturday morning’s church service where he was officially made godfather of nine-month-old Lena Elizabeth.
Growing up Zara was a tomboy and bonded with the princes over their shared love of horses.
The mother-of-two won a silver medal with the British eventing team in the 2012 London Olympics and Harry and William are keen polo players.
Zara, who follows in her mother Princess Anne’s footsteps as an accomplished equestrian, is regularly pictured at polo matches across the country with Prince Harry.
And the duke has in the past been seen showing off his paternal skills while playing with Zara’s eldest daughter Mia, five.
