The fire occurred at a Houston petrochemical storage facility at 10:30am local time (3:30pm GMT) and covered the sky in thick, black smoke. Firefighters at the scene declared that they are now looking to contain the blaze which ignited from seven tanks used to make petrol. Speaking at a press conference, a spokesman for Channel Industries Mutual Aid, Ray Russell, said that the emergency services are now in “defensive mode” to try and control the blaze.
He added: “It is going to have to burn out in that tank or until we complete draining the tank.
“It’s going to be probably two days.
“At this time we are in a defensive mode.”
The blaze began when a tank containing volatile naphtha liquid ignited and spread across other tanks in the complex.
