The EU countries aiming to push Brussels for SHORT Brexit extension

Theresa May is expected to ask European leaders for an extension of the Brexit withdrawal process after MPs rejected a no deal and asked for extra time to find common ground on the divorce deal with the European Union. European Council President Donald Tusk last week voiced support for a long delay, as did some European member states, but EU expert Darren McCaffrey suggested some countries have shown signs of division from Brussels to support a swift extension. Speaking to Euronews, Mr McCaffrey said: "We know Donald Tusk tweeted out on Friday he was in favour of a long delay. The Irish clearly are. The Germans as well.

"Some are much more sceptical. Not least the French, the Italians and it appears the Slovenians."

Mr McCaffrey cited an interview he conducted with Foreign Minister Miro Cerar of Slovenia as a reason to believe some EU member states will agree to an extension but will ensure the delay is short.

Mr Cerar said: "A reasonable extension, which will provide a reasonable solution for both sides, is a good solution.

"But of course, when the UK decided to leave the EU, it was a decision made with some consequences."
