Leaked document reveals Brussels' fears over long Brexit delay

BBC Brussels correspondent Adam Fleming revealed a document shown to the British broadcaster ahead of a meeting of European Foreign Minister outlines the Brexit fears gripping the European Union. Mr Fleming claimed the document included sections voicing concerns about the influence Britain could seek to exercise on major decisions for the bloc should the UK stay in past the March 29 deadline. Speaking to BBC News, the journalist said: "The BBC has been shown a memo that was prepared for a minister that was going to that meeting this morning. It was very revealing of what the EU’s fears are of a long extension.

"They are worried the UK would use those extra months as an opportunity to try and negotiate the permanent future relationship with the EU, which can only be done after Brexit day.

"The EU is worried about the UK trying to subvert the sequencing of all of this. They are also worried about the UK throwing its weight around while it remains a member of the EU while big decisions are being taken."

Theresa May is expected to ask EU leaders to extend Brexit negotiations past the March 29 deadline currently enshrined into British law. Mrs May was given the mandate to make the demand after MPs struck down her tentative divorce deal for a second time last week.
