It all unfolded just a minute into the programme as ITV viewers got their first glimpse of Sean Meredith (played by Jonas Armstrong), step-father to the twins who were later found missing.
He was down by the water, working by the boats with other fishermen when a Brexit jibe was made to a colleague.
“Come on Krzysztof, get a shift on. Gasping here, lad,” Sean exclaimed.
Krzysztof exclaimed: “I’m going as fast as I can!”

“Tell you what mate, as soon as Brexit kicks in you’ll be out on your a**e,” another co-worker added.
“Here, you’re out pal!” Sean exclaimed.
Those watching at home didn’t seem too impressed with the nod to Brexit and took to Twitter to comment.
“Jheez, not even 2 minutes into #TheBay and they’ve already mentioned #Brexit,” one observed.
Another shared: “First minute - Brexit is mentioned #thebay.”
“@ITV b****y #Brexit #thebay no getting away from the drama,” a third added.
