Portuguese MEP Ana Gomes has claimed the EU should have only granted Brexit Britain a three-month extension to the Article 50 process if the UK agrees to hold either a second referendum or a general election. Prime Minister Theresa May travelled to Brussels on Thursday for the EU summit and was expected to make the case for extending Britain’s departure from the Brussels bloc to June 30. A draft of the summit conclusions being considered by the EU27 suggested the UK could be offered an extension until May 22, the day before the start of European elections, on the condition the UK approves Theresa May’s withdrawal agreement which has already been overwhelmingly defeated by MPs twice.
Speaking to Express.co.uk this week, Ms Gomes said: “I think the EU negotiated in good faith with Britain and negotiated the deal that Theresa May agreed to. Even clarified some points at the request of Theresa May. That is the deal. If it’s going to be a deal, that is the deal indeed.
“Now if Britain is telling us Britain needs more time, and this is what is coming out mainly of the recent votes in Parliament.
“I would agree to a short extension, say three months, on the understanding that there would be some kind of People’s Vote that will solve the impasse.
“Be it a general election or a second referendum, a People’s Vote, there has to be a People’s Vote to clarify what is the final decision of the British society.”
