Theresa May’s chief whip Julian Smith called her address outside Downing Street on Wednesday “appalling”. Tory MP Philip Lee said he deeply resented being cast as “the enemies of the people”, the Times reports. While Mark Francois, a hardline Brexiteer, told Sky News: “If you’re trying to persuade numbers of MPs to back a proposition, you don’t do that by insulting them.”
Cabinet ministers Sajid Javid and Andrea Leadsom refused to agree with Mrs May’s plan to turn the public against MPs.
However, Jeremy Hunt tried to excuse her behaviour by suggesting she was “under enormous pressure”.
He said: “You have to accept that no prime minister in living memory has been tested in the way that she has been tested.”
Tory MP Ben Bradley has now decided to support Mrs May’s Brexit deal
