How Remain MPs could force through soft #Brexit in indicative votes #BrexitChaos

After months' of threats, MPs finally seized control of the Commons agenda last night enabling them to stage their own debates and votes on Brexit. The constitutionally unprecedented move means MPs have fundamentally taken control over Brexit from Theresa May. Exact rules and parameters for the Commons debates and votes are likely to be outlined today, with the established options to be debated tomorrow with a final decision made on Monday.

MPs will use pink slips to vote on the various options which will streamline the process.

This is a dramatic change from the way MPs usually vote, which is to say yes - or “aye” - or no to a question, not compare options.

Although, the process is unprecedented, a similar initiative was enacted in 2003 to access options for Lords reform.

MPs used the usual yes or no system to vote on seven options – but in the end they rejected all seven, with not one motion receiving majority support.

The streamlined process means MPs do not have to repeatedly march through lobbies – and can instead vote on all options at once.

This unprecedented move allows for “softer” options to be chosen by MPs as there is a wider field of options for Brexit Britain.

Seven options will be laid out before MPs: to vote on the existing deal, cancelling Brexit altogether, a new referendum, a Norway-style soft Brexit, a Canada-style hard Brexit, a UK-EU customs union or No Deal.
