Ms Vine, a columnist for the Mail, said the incident took place last weekend during the huge Revoke Article 50 march in London. She said a People’s Vote marcher told the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs: “I hope you drop dead in the next 100 yards”. The Cabinet minister didn’t respond as, Ms Vine said, dealing with this sort of abuse is “part of the job”.
It has become apparent for many parliamentarian that “death threats and intimidation are now the norm” and the abuse continues on social media, she said.
Ms Vine also recalled a horrendous Twitter post which threatened “any Leave voter was at risk of being ‘lynched’ by furious Remainers”.
She wrote in Mail: “My husband took his dose of Remainer abuse cheerfully enough. After ten years in frontline politics, he accepts it as part of the job. But it’s undoubtedly getting worse.”
