Dumbo is a familiar story watched by generations since its debut in 1941. With Disney's recent rash of remakes, Tim Burton was hired to reimagine the classic tale. The original film may have had its moments of deep sadness, but the remake has certainly upped the ante for the 21st century. Tim Burton's remake has been given a PG rating by the British Board of Film Classification. The BBFC says a PG rating means: "General viewing, but some scenes may be unsuitable for young children. "A PG film should not unsettle a child aged around eight or older." The BBFC insight cites mild threat and brief violence as the reason behind its PG rating. Warning: spoilers for Dumbo are below. "There is brief violence when a man punches another man in the face, resulting in a bloodied lip. "There are brief upsetting scenes in which a baby elephant is separated from his mother. The age rating is in line with many other Disney remakes, as the 2017's Beauty and the Beast was also rated PG, as was 2018's Christopher Robin. The original Dumbo was rated U but did cite scenes of emotional distress. Common Sense Media, an American website rating films based on their suitability for children, says Dumbo is suitable for children age eight and over. CSM's tagline reads: "Visually impressive remake is sweet but sometimes dark." CSM writes: "How do the characters in Dumbo demonstrate courage and empathy? "Why are these important character strengths? "One of the movie's messages is that our differences help make us special.
