The North Somerset MP chided the broadcaster after she suggested the UK will "crash out" of the European Union unless MPs reach an agreement on a common Brexit strategy by next week. Theresa May announced on Tuesday she would seek a further extension of Article 50 in an attempt to break the impasse currently gripping Parliament. Ms Burley conceded she knew she would be "picked up" for her comment as she asked Jacob Rees-Mogg: "We are where we are, there is an impasse. Unless we have a deal that looks so it can get through by next Wednesday, we’re likely to crash out without a deal.
"Crash out, I know you’ll pick me up on that – that is the phraseology used by some Remainers. Do you think that’s acceptable?"
As Ms Burley predicted, the staunch Brexiteer rose to the challenge and corrected her: "Ms Burley, I would never dream of picking you up, because you are an impeccably impartial interviewer, but I think crashing out is precisely the wrong term. There is a system outside the European Union.
"Most countries in the world trade very successfully without being members of the European Union. We would move to that basis of training, WTO as it’s known. A lot of effort has been made so that we are prepared.
"Equally important, the EU has made steps to ensure it’s prepared as well for us leaving in a few days and that’s what should happen. Interestingly, that’s what Parliament legislated for."
