The actual story of the Joker's transformation is far more detailed than that, and the upcoming film seeks to capitalise on this change.

Thomas Wayne is a billionaire philanthropist running for mayor of Gotham.
The politician also appears briefly in the trailer, in a TV spot for his mayoral campaign.
