Speaking on BBC Newsnight, Belgian MEP Philippe Lamberts admitted the EU will only grant an extension if the UK holds a general election or second referendum. A member of European Parliament's Brexit Steering Group, Mr Lamberts said: "Obviously the two scenarios that spring to mind are, on the one hand, a general election, which would obviously be fought on Brexit scenarios, or a second referendum. “These two would justify, of course, a longer extension and I could imagine the EU Council not conceding that extension.”

Mr Lamberts said if a general election was held, the UK would still have to take part in European parliamentary elections as it would still be a member state.

He said: “Like it or not, as long as you're not out, you're in; and if you're in, you organise elections. It's as simple as that.”

Theresa May suffered yet another blow last night as ministers threatened to step down from Government following her talks with Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn.

Mrs May’s decision to extend an olive branch to Mr Corbyn has caused a rift within her party as MPs fear that she will now bow down to a softer Brexit.
