Agriculture EU commissioner Phil Hogan said he hopes “common sense will prevail” as a no deal Brexit is “simply crazy” because there is “too much at stake”. He said: “Despite the madness of Brexit, I still believe that common sense might prevail. I hope it does. “No deal makes no sense. It’s simply crazy. There’s too much at stake… And there’s no such thing as a good outcome in relation to Brexit.
“But I believe that a no deal Brexit is the worst of all outcomes.”
Although "details and legislation are lacking", Mr Hogan warned that "serious market disruptions" could exist for meat, cheese, sugar and EU rice, not to mention "the logistical difficulties foreseen in the first weeks for perishable products”, like fruits and vegetables.
But Mr Hogan said “we are ready to intervene” with measures provided such as "aid for private storage, public intervention, withdrawals of products from the market and the new rules on state aid”.
