In a defiant speech, the Prime Minister also insisted that it is her main goal to leave the Eu “as soon as possible”.

Speaking at the press conference Mrs May said: “Over the last three months I have voted three times to leave the EU.

“If sufficient numbers of Parliament had voted with me, we’d have left already.”

Despite previously telling MPs that she will not look for an extension beyond June 30, Mrs May rowed back as the EU granted the UK an extension until October 31.

Mrs May will now return to Parliament as she sets out the UK's course of action ahead of another EU summit on June 3.
